Commuters can also catch both Metra and Amtrak trains into Chicago from the Homewood Amtrak Station in town. Homewood sits right on the edge of prehistoric Lake Chicago. Ridge Run is one of the main east-west roads which runs along the old sandy shoreline of that lake. The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District maintains over 365 acres, and the department has won numerous awards. One of those is the NPRA National Gold Medial Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Administration.
